Staying Grounded

Posted on Jun 28, 2012 in Life Lessons from Dance

“You rose again,” he said as he stopped dancing and brought me back to the beginning of a sequence. “You did it again. Why are you rising?” “Because you are,” I said. “I rise; you stay grounded,” he responded. “Ohhh . . . . I didn’t know that.” No one had ever told me that I stay low in the foxtrot even when the man rises. Wow, I could feel a key turning in a lock inside my head as one of those ‘aha’ moments emerged. A Sloppy Swing

Posted on Jun 6, 2012 in Life Lessons from Dance

Balance

“Don’t fall away from me,” he said, “stay connected.” I didn’t want to fall away from him. I wanted to stay connected. I would try again. I would try harder. He had me start doing the steps on my own. God, how I used to hate that. I used to feel so exposed and vulnerable and embarrassed. I used to look with wonder at people practicing by themselves in front of the mirrors so confident and unabashed. Somehow, I had become one of those people. I was doing the steps by myself under his watchful discerning eye...

Dance Me Beautiful just received the Editor’s Choice Designation. In the congratulatory letter, the editorial board consultant said, “I am happy to recommend this intense, moving memoir for Editor’s Choice.” Exciting day.
